History

The Super Flyweight Division, also known as the junior bantamweights, is a relatively new entry in professional boxing. The super flyweights ply their trade in the 112 -115 pound range.

The first title match, in fact, was held in 1980 by the WBC (World Boxing Council). Populated almost exclusively by Latin American and Asian fighters, the Super Flyweight Division. Primarily because of the racial makeup of the division, Super Flyweight boxers are not often seen in the United States.

Rafael Orono won the inaugural title in February of 1980 by defeating Seung-Hoon Lee. The World Boxing Association entered the fray in 1981 when Gustavo Ballas won the vacant title by knocking out Sok-Chul Baek. The International Boxing Federation held out two more years before capitulating and joing the Super Flyweight Division. Its champion was Ju-Do Chun, who won the belt in 1983 with a knockout of Ken Kasugai.

It suprises no one that even fanatic boxing fans fail to be able to name ten fighters during the history of the super flyweights.  That's a shame because fighters like Gilberto Román, Jiro Watanabe, Danny Romero, Khaosai Galaxy, Samson Dutch Boy Gym have provided round after round of masterful boxing.

More recently, Super Flyweights like Nonito Donaire and Román González have become "must see" fighters. 

The "best" ever in the division? It would be extremely difficult to name a fighter other than Khaosai Galaxy. holds the record for most consecutive title defenses at this division, with 19 defenses of the WBA title.nsecutive title defenses at this division, with 19 defenses of the WBA title.

Galaxy has earned the nickname of The Thai Tyson, although his original nickname translates to “The Left Hand That Drills Intestines.”  Both allude to the power possessed by Galaxy, who retired with a record of 47 wins, 1 loss, and no draws, with 41 knockouts. That's an 87% stoppage rate. 

Galaxy's only lost? It came in Khaosai's seventh bout in Galaxy's first 10-round bout by unanimous decision. Going into the bout, Galaxy was 6-0 with 5 knockouts. His opponent: Sak Galaxy, 2-2-0, and no relation.
